Chapter 1 Clovertail woke up instantly as he felt the cold wind of leaf bare on his pelt. His long pure white tail surrounded his entire body. Blazepelt, his deputy, and also his best friend, lay next to him.
“Blazepelt,” he whispered quietly, “Blazepelt wake up!” His friend slowly opened his eyes and rose from his nest, his orange fur was fluffed up from the coldness. Clovertail felt sorry for his friend. For his friend’s fur was short and thin, Clovertail’s fur was long and thick. Clovertail didn’t like to see any cat suffer from the cold.
“I wasn’t sleeping.” muttered Blazepelt.
Sure you weren’t.” said Clovertail. “You need to make the patrols!”
“I know, I know, give me a break Clovertail!” Blazepelt gave a playful cuff over Clovertail’s ear.
“Come on!”
“Okay, fine. You can lead a hunting patrol with Toughclaw and Smalltail.”
“Good, I could use the exercise!” Mewed Clovertail. He walked over to Smalltail and gently cuffed his ear. The nervous tabby jumped strait to his feet and then relaxed once he saw Clovertail standing before him.
“Hello Clovertail, what’s wrong?”
“I’m leading a hunting patrol with you and Toughclaw. Do you want your apprentice to come?”
“Sure! I’ll go get her!” and he bounded across the clearing.
Then Clovertail went to get Toughclaw. The muscular she-cat was laying near the nursery.
“Toughclaw!” He yowled, “Hunting patrol!” Toughclaw raised her head.
“Fine.” She called, “I’ll be right there!”
Clovertail went to the entrance of camp to wait for his friends. A few moments later, Smalltail arrived with his apprentice, Angelpaw.
“Hi Clovertail!” Angelpaw called. After that, Toughclaw joined them.
“Are you ready to go now?” Asked the agitated she-cat.
“Yes,” said Clovertail, “Let’s go.” As the patrol got nearer to Treeclan territory, he noticed many warriors sitting by the border, scanning Lightningclan territory. Fishstar stood up when he heard the patrol coming.
“Greetings.” Said Clovertail. “What brings you to the border?” He waited for the reply while Fishstar ordered his warriors to back away.
“Greetings Clovertail.” Fishstar said. “I do not wish to fight. But I need to speak with your leader and medicine cat.”
“Why?” Growled Toughclaw.
“There is no need to be hasty.” Spoke Fishstar. “Starclan have sent me a message. I need to speak with your leader immediately. I shall bring my medicine cat and her apprentice with me.”
“Very well” Bowed Clovertail. “We shall escort you to our camp.”
“Deerpool, Longpaw, over here.” Called Fishstar, as a young, white tom and a small orange she-cat trailed after their leader. As they made their way to camp, Angelpaw caught two thrushes for the fresh kill pile.
“Are you sure this is a good idea Clovertail?” Whispered Toughclaw. She looked uneasy.
“They just want to speak to Thornstar and Mosscloud.” Replied Clovertail as they arrived at the camp entrance, where Snakepelt was keeping guard. She nodded as Clovertail, the patrol and Fishstar and his medicine cats padded through, into the camp. Thornstar scented the cats as they entered the clearing. She jumped down from the Highbush, a tall rock surrounded by bushes except on one side, that was where the leader’s den was.
“Welcome Fishstar, Deerpool, Longpaw.” She addressed them one by one. “Why are you in our camp?”
“Greetings, Thornstar.” Replied Fishstar. “We mean no harm and do not wish to stay long. Starclan has sent me a message and wish for me to share it with the other three clans. I wish to speak with your medicine cat also.”
“Very well.” replied Thornstar. “I will show you to my den. “Clovertail, go get Mosscloud.” Ordered Thornstar.
“Yes, Thornstar.” replied Clovertail as he went to get the medicine cat. As he entered the den, he wrinkled his nose at the stench. Mosscloud was applying mouse bile to Moosewhisker’s tick bites.
“Mosscloud,” Said Clovertail, “Thornstar wishes to see you. She is in her den.’
Mosscloud nodded and padded out of her den. Moosewhisker’s nose twitched at the smell of mouse bile.
“Who’s going to finish my treatment?” He asked.
Clovertail scowled as he picked up the damp moss. He foolishly picked it up with his mouth.
“Yuck!” He chocked as he threw it back on the ground. He ran to the back of the medicine cat den, where a small pool of water lay, and tried to drink as much as possible. But the taste didn’t go away. Moosewhisker chuckled. Clovertail came back and used his paws to rub the mouse bile on the remaining ticks.
“Thanks youngster.” Said Moosewhisker as the last tick crawled off.
“It was nothing.” Sighed Clovertail. He padded slowly over to the fresh kill pile where Birdfur and Petalseed were talking in hushed voices. Clovertail could see Thornstar and Mosscloud giving their farewells to Fishstar, Deerpool, and Longpaw as they were escorted out of camp by Blazepelt and Toughclaw. He picked up a thrush and began to eat.
